The Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg is an interdisciplinary Centre of Competence for Geoinformatics, integrating basic and applied research with graduate education and outreach activities. Z_GIS research is centred along seven research areas, where methodological excellency in the conceptualisation of spatial thinking is integrated with domain knowledge in addressing today’s complex problems.
Besides its excellency in research, Z_GIS is recognised as a hub for graduate education in Geoinformatics with a distinct international orientation. As an Interfaculty Department, Z_GIS develops geospatial competences across disciplines, offering graduate study programs in residential as well as distance learning modes. A global network of partners from academia and industry serves as a strong platform for joint research and exchange of students and faculty – supporting the worldwide geospatial community and fostering awareness of the spatial dimension of social and natural phenomena.
Overall, capacity building and translation of research results into educational outcomes are a key element of Z_GIS’ strategic concept, supporting new insights through research as well as outreach to the GI community with highly qualified graduates.
